SARVAJANIK UNIVERSITY Hosts Grand Model United Nations Conference: SUMUN 2.0

SURAT: Sarvajanik University was the host of a two days Model United Nations Conference from the 17th to 18th of February, 2026. The event was organised under SU Carnival. SUMUN 2.0 is the accelerated version of SUMUN (2025) and inspired by Mr Ashish Vakil – President SU, Dr Kiran Pandya – Hon. Provost, SU and Mr Ashish Desai – Registrar SU. The conference was coordinated by Dr Vandana Shah, Dr Sarosh Dastoor and Dr Pariza Kamboj. The ‘students officer team’ includes Mr Daksh Mistry, Mr Tirth Parekh, Mr Farshaz Master, Mr Rishabh Bajaj and Ms Krishi Mehta. There were around 130 participants in total, ranging from students of Class 6th to college students. The conference provided an opportunity to the young delegates to try out different aspects of diplomacy, public policy discussions, strategic negotiation, critical thinking, adaptability, and journalistic reporting in a simulated global environment.

The conference had five different committees, each of which was a challenge to leadership and critical thinking in different ways. The Lok Sabha committee worked on reviewing the environmental crisis in India. One of the main issues that the committee talked about was dangerously high AQI levels. It also discussed the pollution of rivers, problems with waste management, and how the pollution control mechanism is broken at its core.

The UNGA DISEC committee discussed about foreign military and intelligence interference in regional conflicts. The delegates showed a high level of diplomatic skills while negotiating resolutions to promote international peace and the accountability for global security issues. An international student, studying at SU, represented the delegate of Switzerland in the committee.

Making the conference more creative and livelier was the Mahabharat Crisis Committee, where delegates reacted to different critical events of the epic. By quick decision making and changing crisis scenarios, participants decided the fates and handled the conflicts that were coming, thus demonstrating strategic thinking and adaptability under pressure.

The IPL Auction Committee provided the simulation of a very rapid scenario where franchises negotiated budgets, managed squads, bid strategically for players, and built competitive teams, thereby sharpening analytical, financial, and negotiation skills in a high, pressure environment.

The International Press committee had a vital role in keeping the transparency and documentation as delegates who were journalists and photographers attended the committee sessions, wrote reports objectively, and took pictures of the key moments that were shared with the conference audience.

The inauguration of the conference was honoured by the presence of chief guests including Mr Viral Desai, an eminent environmentalist, widely recognized as ‘The Greenman’, along with Mr Himanshu Bhatt – Assistant Editor at The Times of India and Mr Nikhil Madrasi, Chairman SGCCI. Their presence and motivating speeches encouraged the young delegates. The participants were judged by experienced Executive Board members from different parts of country, with years of debating expertise and professional excellence in their respective fields.

SUMUN 2.0 showcased Sarvajanik University’s dedication in promoting knowledgeable discussion, leadership skills, and well rounded intellectual growth among students. The outcomes of the event include 130 young leaders trained in global diplomacy and governance, Strategic thinking demonstrated through crisis simulations, and Leadership skills honed across diverse committee formats.
